Makeup Hygiene And Sanitary Practices Tutorial

While it might not be glamorous or fun, part of your responsibility is the scrupulously maintaining sanitary and hygienic makeup, brushes, and application tools. Dirty makeup and tools can carry bacteria and spread infection. Furthermore, improper maintenance and storage can lead to your makeup going bad and spoiling prematurely–a waste of money that can easily be avoided. So, investing a few minutes worth of time and effort each week on maintenance will pay off in the end.
General hygiene and upkeep
Many people aren’t aware that products such as eye shadow, blush, pressed powder, and lipstick should be cleaned! These products tend to come into contact with your fingers, which can lead to unsanitary or dirty makeup. To prevent this, develop a habit of cleaning your makeup — all of it — after it comes into contact with your hands (or anyone else’s hand, for that matter.)
There are several products available to clean your makeup tools. They can be found in all the locations where makeup is found. If you weren’t able to find these ready-made products then a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol can be used to sanitize your makeup products between uses. Try to keep makeup stored in a cool place whenever possible. Heat breaks down and spoils products such as foundations, concealers, and cream shadows faster, and can melt your lip colours.
Compacts and pallets (pallets are the trays that hold a number of colours of the same makeup — for example a lipstick pallet) will require cleaning from time to time. Powers and creams tend to get caked around the edges of these containers, which can lead to the impression they aren’t in good condition, when in fact they just get a lot of use. Use a cotton swab to clean around the edges.
Three times a year, check all your products for expiry dates. Throw away anything that has expired. You don’t drink spoiled milk– so why would you put expired foundation on your face? Most products have an expiry date or a “best before” date printed on the package. As a general rule, the following guidelines should be observed for makeup shelf-life.
General Expected Lifetime:
Liquid and cream foundation: 2 years
Concealer: 2 years
Face powder: 2 years
Mascara: 4 – 6 months
Lipstick: 1 year
Lip and eye pencils: 1 year
Eye Shadow: 2 (creams, 12 – 18 months)
Eye Cream:6 months
Sunscreen: 2 years
Face cream: 1 – 2 years (depends on ingredients; natural and plant-based ingredients spoil more quickly. Check labels carefully.)
