“Next time you think of beautiful things, don’t forget to count yourself in.”
My idea of makeup was eyeliner, mascara and lipstick. I remember the first time I tried to buy make up I felt like a fish out of water in that store. I was like, what the fury foot is contour and highlight?
I started out simple, some foundation (liquid & powder) and an eye shadow palatte to go with my mascara, eyeliner and 12 shades of lipstick i already had. Although I went out and got these things I had no idea what I was doing, hence I needed to do some research.
I hope my findings interest you, comment below with your beginners story.
An Introduction to makeup products
At first you will likely feel as if you have millions of products to choose from. Dont let the variety daunt you. All you need are the colours/type of makeup to match your skin type and skin tone. Your knowledge of makeup products is never complete. At least once a month, you should put in some ‘research’ time learning about new development in the makeup world.

Concealer
Concealers come in a range of consistencies, from very think liquids you sponge on the skin to stick concealer you draw or dab onto the skin. Concelaer comes in a range of colours to suit many skin tones, as well as in “concealer wheels” (blue, green, yellow, pink, and lavender) used to correct redness and black or blue skin discoloration such as dark circles under the eyes or brushing.
Some concealer are made for blemish-prone skin and include ingredients such as salicylic acid to keep pimples at bay.
2. Foundation
Foundation comes in a range of ‘coverages’ that begins at very sheer and end at nearly opaque. The sheerest is tinted moisturizer. The most opaque is a liquid-to-powder formula. Mineral and powder foundations range somewhere in the middle in terms of coverage. In fact, foundation product come in liquid, liquid that dries with a powder finish, cream, or mineral powder formulas.
Hence foundation, like concealer, must be carefully colour-matched to your skin tone. You can mix shades to create an exact colour match for skin tones that don’t match your bottled shades. Remember, foundations come in variety of formula such as water based or oi based. An oil-based foundation is perfect for dry skin, but will leave a person with oily skin with shiny look within moments of finishing your application.
In addition to your foundations, you should stock sunscreen. Many foundations, even the powder kind, have an SPF 15 sunscreen added in. However, not all of your foundation will have sun protection. Keep a bottle of SPF 15 or higher.
3. Powder
As with concealer and foundation, face powder is meant to colour-match your skin tone. Add a jar of translucent powder to round of your powder collection.
4. Blush and Bronzer:
Blush and bronzer come in powder, cream, gel, and mineral formulas. Try a few colours as consistency of each works differently on different skin types. For instance cream blush, works well on dry skin.
5. Mascara
Similarly, when you shop for mascara, try not to worry too much about all the marketing that tells you it lengthens or thickens or plumps or conditions. Your two most important selections will be lash thickening mascaas, and waterproof macara.
6. Eye Shadow
At any rate eye shadow is quite possibly the toughest product to stock because there are, quite literally, thousands of colours to choose from! Besides the colour variety, eye shadow also comes in powder, cream, stick, liquid, and gel formulas. When you are starting out, do not feel you need to own one of every colour formula ever created. What you do need, however, will be 4 all-over powder shadow colors in white, beige, bone, or a similar pale neutral color.
Next, choose 12 powder colours (an eye shadow pallet is a convenient selection) you can also use in the middle or crease of the eye–these will be brighter or darker than ‘all over’ neutrals. Furthermore to these lid colours, select 6 dark powder shades you can use to line the eyelid (look for dark brown, gray, navy, plum, dark green and black).
7. Eyeliner
Your staple eyeliner products will be pencil liner in black, brown, gray, navy, green, and plum. In addition to these products, add a few gel or liquid liners in the same colours for more dramatic applications.
8. Eyebrow Makeup
Your eyebrow makeup should consist of 4*6 brow powders in light, medium, and dark brown, along with a honey shade and a reddish shade. Select one clear brown gel and tinted brow gels.
9. Lip Makeup
Lip makeup, next to eye makeup, has the most colours and textures to choose from. As with eye makeup, do not feel pressured to own one of every type of lip makeup on the market. Secondly, to complement your lipstick colours, you will also need to stock a few shades of lip gloss and lip stain. For instance you can select at least one gloss in clear, pink, peach, brown, and red to match your lipsticks. Also bear in mind that lip stain is handy for natural lip applications.
Finally, you will need lip liner pencils. Lip liner is meant to match lipstick colour, so you should have one to match each of your staple shades. In spite of that you don’t necessarily need 20 lip liner.
