Hey guys,

You probably do not know I started my hair journey a few months ago, this was because my hair has been chemically damaged due to my neglect and lack of knowledge. This journey is a learning process for me as I now realise there are many things I didn’t know that are essential and important for growing healthy hair.

Today I share with you something I have learnt only since I started my hair journey and figure there are others out there like myself who had no idea these things were important. I have also added some links to a few divas who I’ve followed on my journey.

Why is Deep Conditioning important for relaxed hair?

Conditioners help to restore moisture and strength to your hair after you shampoo and after chemical services such as chemical relaxers, perm, bleached and permanently colour-treated, also if your hair is extremely damaged and dry.

Conditioners can aid with detangling, aid in making your hair smoother, also with achieving bouncy, luxurious, healthy hair and should also improve the strength and elasticity of your hair.  Hair that is conditioned often will be able to resist breakage better than if you shampoo alone.

Deep conditioning for Relaxed Hair

  1. Read the labels properly. This is because the conditioner can be either a rinse out conditioner (which coats the shaft without penetrating it and the directions will say rinse after 2-3 minutes.) Or a true deep conditioner that will say leave the product in for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Deep condition with direct heat (hooded dryer or heat cap) for 20 – 30 minutes. Or indirect heat (hot towel or overnight).
  3. Relaxed hair should be deep conditioned every week.

Protein treatments are important for relaxed hair.

Protein conditioners work by temporarily rebuilding areas of weakness in your hair structure which makes your hair feel stronger. Our hair needs to be balanced with protein and moisture. Protein treatments can be used to restore that balance your hair if it has been damaged. Application of a treatment can also help with the resiliency of damaged hair strands.

To avoid protein overload don’t use too often as that will result in dry/coarse hair. How often you apply it will depend on how severely your hair is damage and the type of protein treatment that you use.
